On October 5, 2017, members of the Crimean Tatar diaspora and human rights activists held a solidarity event calling for the immediate release of Ilmi Umerov — a Crimean Tatar leader and deputy chairman of the Mejlis, unjustly imprisoned by Russian authorities for his peaceful political stance.
The event brought together community voices in defense of human rights, Indigenous identity, and freedom of speech. Participants raised awareness about ongoing repressions in occupied Crimea and demanded international pressure to support political prisoners like Umerov.
