First Crimean Tatar immigrants came to Canada in 1978, moving predominantly from Romania’s Dobruja region. However, it wasn’t until 2007, when Crimean Tatar Community was formally established in Canada. The number of Crimean Tatars in Canada has gradually increased over the past 10 years and the community continues to grow. Crimean Tatar immigrants predominantly settle in the Greater Toronto Area as well as the cities of Vancouver and Montreal, as them being the most popular destinations for newcomers.
In 2014, the Canadian Association of Crimean Tatars was established as a representative body of Crimean Tatar Diaspora in Canada. The Association defined its main objective as preserving Crimean Tatar culture, language and traditions in Canada. Among various activities, in which Crimean Tatar Association of Canada is involved, the most notable are annual commemoration events dedicated to the victims of the Deportation of Crimean Tatars on May 18, 1944, Iftar dinners sponsored by Crimean Tatar community members both in Canada and Crimea, participation in various cultural festivals, such as Navruz, Ukrainian Bloor West Festival, Canada Muslim Festival, Turkic Canadian Convention and many others. In addition, Crimean Tatar Association organizes various events aimed at supporting Crimean Tatar organizations as well as individuals in Crimea and other parts of Ukraine.
